The School of Oceanography in the College of the Environment at University of Washington currently has an outstanding position for a full-time web developer to join the Simons CMAP ( ocean data portal project; a multi-disciplinary and long-term initiative supported by the Simons Foundation. ( The project goal is to integrate, visualize, and share large scale ocean-related data sets with the scientific community and general public. We are looking for a full-stack web specialist to contribute to both front-end and back-end development. This is not an entry-level position, and candidates must have proven experience in Node.js, React.js, SQL, and AWS. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project that will have a meaningful impact on ocean research. The purpose of this position is to design and develop the back-end and front-end from concept to completion of a web app for the Simons Ocean Atlas which is a grant-funded project designed to collect, curate, and integrate diverse ocean-related data sets consisting of unstructured field observations, remote sensing raster data sets, and model-generated outputs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• (40%) Develop, enhance, and maintain the project’s web applications. • (15%) Maintenance and development of the cloud services. • (15%) Produce technical and user documentation for processes and procedures. • (15%) Develop unit tests and provide code coverage to accurately test logic and functionalities. • (10%) Collaborate with the management, data ingestion, and feedback team members. • (5%) Perform related tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related fields. • Four to five years of experience as a full-stack web developer. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS • Proficiency with Node.js, Express.js, Reac.js, SQL, and AWS Elastic Beanstalk. • Production experience with Redux and Redux-Saga libraries. • Experience in development, querying and manipulating data in an RDBMS such as MSSQL. • Experience with source code management tools such as GitHub. • Demonstrated high degree of organization and ability to manage multiple competing priorities. • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new methods and processes. • Proven ability to independently prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines. • Ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team is essential.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with interactive data visualization libraries such as Plotly.js. • Familiarity with geospatial mapping services/APIs (e.g., ArcGIS.js). • Experience working with Google authentication APIs. • Background in Earth Sciences, oceanography, or scientific computing.
