What You'll Get to Do:

The Technical Writer Manager will lead and manage a team of technical writers and editors responsible for creating, maintaining, and controlling high-quality documentation for complex government systems, programs, and deliverables. This role ensures all documentation adheres to contract requirements, military standards (e.g., MIL-STD, S1000D), and Federal plain language guidelines, driving consistency, accuracy, and timely delivery across multiple technical projects.

More About the Role:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate a team of technical writers and editors, typically at or below the T3/P3/S3 level, establishing efficient documentation workflows, style guides, and production schedules. Manage resource allocation to meet parallel project deadlines.

  • Set goals and objectives for team members to achieve operational results within the department, focusing on immediate- to short-term outcomes (less than 1 year).

  • Direct the review, editing, and final quality assurance of technical manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), user guides, training materials, and official reports to ensure strict compliance with contractual obligations, security protocols, and Government DOD documentation standards.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact (POC) for all documentation matters, successfully liaising with engineers, subject matter experts (SMEs), program managers, and government clients to extract necessary technical information and manage client review cycles.

  • Streamline duties amongst staff, providing clear guidance aligning Division and contractual requirements to specific requests.
  • \n
  • Develop, modify, and maintain clear and concise policies, guidelines, memorandums, and other Army correspondence for the Division.
  • \n
  • Serve as a Content Manager for the Division, ensuring record-keeping requirements are considered in the development and storage of all new, existing, or modified documentation and correcting file storage schemas that are not in compliance.

  • Enable Division collaboration and knowledge sharing within the Organization through the design, development, and maintenance of SharePoint sites for both REACT and GOSIIT contracts.

  • Deliver proofread products on time, in good grammatical order, with complete references, tables, acronym lists, and appendices.
  • \n
  • Identify and implement improvements to processes, systems, or products to enhance performance within the job area.
  • \n
  • Participate in decision-making and make recommendations to upper management regarding budget and resource allocation for the technical writing team.

You'll Bring These Qualifications:
    \n
  • Active TS/SCI clearance
  • \n
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Writing, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • \n
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in technical writing or editing, with at least 3 years in a management or supervisory role, preferably supporting a Department of Defense (DoD) or similar Federal program
  • \n
  • Demonstrated experience in collecting and organizing information for preparation of user manuals, training materials, installation guides, proposals, and reports
  • \n
  • Proven ability to edit functional descriptions, system specifications, user manuals, special reports, and other customer deliverables and documents
  • \n
  • Advanced skills in analyzing and interpreting data to develop metrics, information dashboards, briefings, and other means of communicating with leadership and customers
  • \n
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret, apply, and enforce government and military documentation standards (e.g., MIL-STD, FAR, CDRL requirements)
  • \n
  • Strong leadership and people management skills, including experience in hiring, performance management, and professional development of team members
  • \n
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain policies, practices, and procedures to stakeholders within and outside the job function
  • \n
  • Proficiency in project management and the ability to lead entire projects or processes within the technical writing domain
  • \n
  • Experience with content management systems and collaboration tools, particularly SharePoint

This role has a direct impact on the immediate- and short-term operational results of the department, ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality technical documentation that meets all contractual and regulatory requirements. The Technical Writer Manager will be responsible for managing day-to-day elements of the budget, such as time cards and overtime for staff, and may participate in broader budgetary decision-making processes.

The successful candidate will be responsible for making improvements to processes, systems, and products to enhance the performance of the technical writing team. They will face difficult problems that may require understanding of a broader set of issues, often involving multiple job areas or specialties. Problem-solving will typically involve drawing from prior experience and analysis of complex technical and organizational issues.

Communication & Influence:

This role requires frequent communication with parties within and outside of the technical writing function, including external customers and vendors. The Technical Writer Manager will be expected to explain policies, practices, and procedures of the job area to others within the organization and work to justify and gain cooperation on these matters from other parties.

The proposed salary range for this position is:
$67,800 - 142,200 USD
