ENGINEER

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

The Backup Engineer (BE) candidate will have a combination of Backup and system administrator skills. The role will take direction from Manager of Systems Engineering. The BE will provide technical leadership and engineering tasks with a primary focus on backing up and protecting company’s backup data on IT systems according to defined policies. This position will be responsible for the organization’s backup infrastructure including computers, servers, and storage; perform troubleshooting, problem analysis and disaster recovery. Responsibilities include providing backup system administration support and collaboration with other stakeholders to install and maintain the company’s system, storage, and virtual compute infrastructure. Proficiency is required in concept of operations development, system design and review, requirements definition, system transition planning, and supporting defined system integration tasks.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Engineering:

Design, implement, and manage backup systems, including on-premise and cloud-based solutions.

Implement Backup/Data Protection, Storage infrastructure and security and compliance standards.

Revamp backup methodologies to align with current and emerging security standards.

Ensure Backup Hardware Architecture meets capacity requirement for completing backup jobs timely and efficiently (e.g. performance testing, monitoring, operations).

Perform Backup and replication network engineering tasks (e. g. planning, provisioning).

Implement encryption and security measures to safeguard data during transit and storage.

Maintenance:

Perform periodic software updates, fix and security patches on Backup/Data Protection and Storage products used by the company. Specifically: Dell EMC Avamar and Data Domain.

Automate repeated manual tasks using script and job schedulers.

Tasks:

Co-ordinate with storage engineer to orchestrate storage snapshot schedule and backup job schedule.

Provide timely updates to management on backup system health and recovery status.

Ensure daily scheduled backups complete successfully, on time and also successfully get replicated to the DR/Remote site to meet offsite backup requirements and to ensure business continuity.

Collaboration:

Collaborate with IT and Business leaders in the organization to stablish data backup requirements.

Work closely with system administrators, network engineers, and database teams to align backup strategies with overall IT goals.

Train and guide junior team members on backup best practices and tools.

Support:

Troubleshoot backup-related incidents and provide escalation support as required.

Liaise with hardware and software vendors for issue resolution and system upgrades

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education; associate degree preferred

7-10 years of IT related work experience

• Operating Systems: Minimum 5 years of experience with administering Windows and Unix servers.
• Virtualization: Minimum 5 years of experience with managing Vmware platform.
• Backup: Minimum 5 years of experience with Dell EMC Networker, Avamar and Datadomain platforms.
• Familiar Technologies: Active Directory/LDAP , Backup and Recovery, LAN/WAN, MPLS and VPN Network concepts, Load balancer, Enterprise Security, Enterprise Applications, Citrix and emerging Cloud technologies.

Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively

Strong listening, written and verbal communication skills (English required); excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills

Strong MS Office skills, including Excel, Word and Outlook
