Description Bi-weekly Salary: Road Maintenance Worker II: $1,836.64 - $2,207.85 The Del Norte County Community Development Department is seeking a qualified candidate to fill one (1) vacancy for the position of Road Maintenance Worker II. This position is classified as full-time. Incumbents in this class operate a variety of heavy power-driven road maintenance and construction equipment. Under general supervision, to perform a variety of physical labor duties in the maintenance, repair and construction of roads, bridges, and landfills; and related work as required.
DISTINGUISING CHARACTERISTICS: This is the journey level in the Road Maintenance Worker series. Road Maintenance Worker II is distinguished from the Road Maintenance Worker I by the requirement that incumbents may possess or obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License, expected to display the required level of skill and accuracy.
Detailed Work Activities Essential job duties may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.
- Assists in the digging, installation, removal and maintenance of culverts, roads, and drain tiles.
- Assists in construction of fences, guardrails, and/or various other structures. Assists the road crew in the performance of basic road construction including building, paving, patching, and smoothing.
- Loads and transports water, rock, fill, debris, and/or various other materials to and from construction.
- Loads and secures materials and equipment on trucks for transportation.
- Maintains safety standards and procedures in compliance with State and local regulations during the operation of road maintenance and construction equipment and in performing manual tasks.
- Operates light equipment during road maintenance and construction such as front-end loaders, dump trucks, backhoes, patching rigs, rollers, mowers, compactors, and forklifts.
- Operates heavy equipment in a training or limited capacity.
- Operates light trucks in the performance of routine duties.
- Operates hand and power tools in the performance of road, ditch, access area, and/or culvert clearance work.
- Participates in the construction, paving, patching and smoothing of road surfaces. Performs manual tasks such as construction of fences and guardrails, spreading gravel and sand, and/or various other support functions for the regular road crew.
- Performs excavations on roads, ditches and road access areas.
- Performs traffic monitoring and flagging for road construction crews.
- Performs yard and maintenance duties including sweeping, mopping shelving, mowing, and/or garbage disposal.
- Performs general patrolling duties, inspecting and cleaning roads, access areas, and/or other problems spots.
- Stays abreast of current information on the operation and servicing of light road construction equipment.
- Transports personnel, fuel, tools, and/or other materials to and from various locations.
- Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education, training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
- Possession of a High School Diploma or GED.
- Six (6) months progressively responsible related experience such as: a general laborer in construction or landscaping work involving moving solid material such as sand or gravel; utilizing equipment or hand tools in the clearing and maintenance of land or road construction.
Special Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's license.
- All County of Del Norte employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through State law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County of Del Norte requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Work related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Note: The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to job duties as defined under Distinguishing Characteristics.
Knowledge of:
- The provision of the California Vehicle Code applying to the operation of heavy truck and safe driving practices.
- The procedures, methods, and tools of road construction maintenance.
- Simple power and hand tools.
Ability to:
- Operate heavy and light road equipment.
- Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under unfavorable conditions.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Learn the methods, practices, and procedures of basic road maintenance and construction; and the operation of heavy trucks.
- Skillfully and safely operate a variety of heavy maintenance equipment.
- Read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
- Maintain cooperative relationship with others.
- Work in elevated places.

ELIGIBILITY: Regular Permanent Full-Time Employees : Eligible for a comprehensive range of benefits

Paid annual leave: Vacation: 1-5 years of continuous service: 15 working days per year; 6-10 years of continuous service: 20 working days per year; 11-15 years of continuous service: 25 working days per year; 16 years or higher of continuous service: 30 working days per year.
