In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to select and install native grasses and plants, perform essential prairie maintenance, and implement conservation techniques such as controlled burns and specialized chemical applications. Summary of Duties : Under general supervision, the Park Natural Resources Specialist directs and participates in the management and maintenance of the City of Plano nature preserves and other special conservation areas. Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job. Selects and installs native grasses and plants appropriate to the prairie ecosystem; provides information pertaining to natural resources including plant identification. Plans and performs natural area maintenance including selective mowing, specialized chemical applications, and controlled burns. Operates specialized equipment related to restoration and conservation projects. Performs general site maintenance; mows grass; trims trees; completes general pond maintenance; pulls and sprays weeds. Monitors water requirements of native grasses and plants. May direct subordinate staff ensures all staff has proper equipment and materials to successfully complete assigned tasks. Inspects and maintains assigned equipment. Assists in the investigation of and response to citizen complaints/inquiries. Participates in various committees and focus groups; assists in department-wide data collection; reviews various project plans; oversees contracted work as assigned. May be subject to on-call duty. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential. Marginal Duties: Performs other duties as assigned. Typical Decisions : The incumbent must analyze/diagnose condition of native plant materials and conservation areas and choose and implement appropriate methods to accomplish restoration goals. Minimum Qualifications : Knowledge of: Native and adapted plant materials; methods of establishment and development for various types of plant materials; proper techniques and operation and maintenance of equipment related to conserving and/or renovating land areas to a historically natural state; State purchasing regulations; City ordinances and regulations. Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; operating a personal computer using Microsoft Office applications; identifying and assessing native plant materials and other natural resources, such as prairie grasslands; planting, transplanting, and seeding native and adapted materials; selecting and applying chemicals for the preservation and development of native plant materials. Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Management, Forestry, Horticulture, or related field preferred. Experience: Three (3) years of experience in general grounds/parks maintenance and maintaining native plant materials. Six (6) months supervisory experience preferred. Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements. Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver’s license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law) and Texas Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License required within 6 months of hire. Conditions of Employment : Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check. Physical Demands and Working Conditions : Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings, parks, medians & rights of way, to operate equipment and motor vehicles on terrain and streets; strength, stamina and mobility to perform light to medium physical work and around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and specialized equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance, repairs, and various daily tasks. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, dust, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
