The Nurse Intern I will work under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse mentor while carrying out designated skills they have learned in Nursing educational programs and/or orientation and have demonstrated competence to their unit manager or RN mentor. This position is designed to provide a student nurse an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills for their future role of Registered Nurse including basic patient care experience, purposeful rounding, and high quality patient safety measures. The Nurse Intern I will assist the patient to progress seamlessly and effectively throughout out their hospital stay. This position will be responsible for working with all patient populations, including those in isolation precautions, to offer a real-life, diverse experiences. The Nurse Intern I will demonstrate excellent customer service performance in that their attitude and actions are consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant HealthCare and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.
Responsibilities:C ommunicates with patients and families in a professional, therapeutic and courteous manner.
H as clinical and social contact with patients, including all age groups, and can appropriately assess, care for and treat them according to the guidelines as defined by Covenant HealthCare.
P rovides care to all patient populations with a variety of diagnoses and care needs.
P rovides basic nursing care alongside the NCA team under the direction of the RN mentor.
D ocuments all patient care observations and interventions in the electronic record accurately, clearly, in a timely manner following all established policies.
P rioritizes and organizes delegated patient care assignments.
P erforms technical nursing skills as outlined in standards and procedures manual and as described by unit-specific competencies.
E ngages in reinforcement of patient and family teaching as delegated by the RN mentor.
I dentifies and communicates any changes in the patient’s condition to the RN mentor.
P articipates in patient care and unit activities to achieve compliance with all regulatory requirements.
D emonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient rights, as identified within the organization.
F unctions with an awareness and application of safety as identified within the organization.
E ncouraged to be proactive in seeking learning experiences.
D emonstrates ability to give care cooperatively with other patient care team members.
H andles equipment appropriately and returns equipment to proper place after its use.
O ther duties as assigned.
Qualifications:EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
H igh School Diploma or equivalent required.
Fourteen months from graduation from an NLN accredited school of nursing and have completed at least one semester of fundamentals or Med Surg, which includes basic patient care nursing interventions.
B LS certification required or obtained within 60 days of hire or transfer.
H as demonstrated by transcript and instructed evaluation above average academic and provides a signed clinical skills checklist from previous or current clinical semester to demonstrate knowledge and performance of basic care interventions.
K NOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
C omputer competence, including Microsoft Office and Outlook.
K nowledge of computer software programs and up to date technology.
E xcellent oral and written communication skills.
M ust be able to work well with the public and able to be tactful in often hectic and stressful situations.
A bility to prioritize simultaneous situations and multitask with the ability to prioritize tasks.
S ound judgement in handling confidential or sensitive issues and material.
