Description Under close supervision, to perform paraprofessional library services in a community library, bookmobile, or at the Services and Support Center.
NOTE: Candidates who meet the employment standards will be invited to take the Written Examination tentatively scheduled for the week of December 9, 2024. The exam date(s) may change based on the number of applicants. The list established may be used to fill other vacancies as they occur. Typical Tasks The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
- Maintains good public relations; answers routine questions and assists patrons in the use of library facilities, technology, and resources;
- Refers complex questions requiring advanced knowledge to a Librarian;
- Advises patrons about library materials, including books, databases, digital, and reference materials;
- Develops content and posts to library website(s) and social media channels;
- Develops and sets up displays and promotes library services and programs;
- Conducts preliminary subject searches for patrons;
- Selects and stocks bookmobile materials for assigned routes and stops;
- Circulates books and materials via bookmobiles;
- Prepares and maintains statistical reports, records, and lists;
- Assists in weeding collection;
- Advises patrons regarding selection of library materials and suggests titles to readers based on their interests;
- Completes bibliographic entries and performs copy cataloguing; updates and edits bibliographic records and downloads records;
- Compares recommended books for purchase against current collection;
- Assists in identifying the needs and interests of library patrons;
- Assists and leads library programs, story times, and classes; assists with outreach;
- Trains patrons and staff on use of library and library-related technology and equipment;
- Handles inter-library loan requests and lending;
- May have "in charge" responsibility related to the library or bookmobile emergency procedures, building issues, etc., in the absence of senior personnel;
- May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required*;
- Performs other related duties, as required.
Employment Standards Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:
Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent,
and
One (1) year of full-time experience equivalent to a Library Clerk with the County of Santa Clara.
Completion of 60 semester or 90 quarter units from college may substitute for the work experience.
Special Requirements - *As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.

- Bookmobile materials and services;
- English usage, style, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Ability to: - Identify the needs and interests of library patrons and assist them;
- Organize work assignments;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies;
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures;
- Learn and use basic library tools, methods, and procedures;
- Take "in charge" responsibility related to the library or bookmobile emergency procedures, building issues, etc., in the absence of senior personnel;
- Operate library equipment, such as computers, and use related software applications and databases;
- Learn pertinent information about the library collection and proper use of reference materials;
- Assist and lead library programs and classes, and assist with outreach;
- Set up displays and promote library services and programs;
- Assist in weeding collections and recommending books for purchase;
- Ability to prepare and maintain reports, records, and lists with accuracy;
- Thoroughly collect, search, process, and interpret simple data;
- Develop content and post to library website(s) and social media channels;
- Understand and follow written and oral directions;
- Interpret and apply rules and standards of the County Library.
