Join Our Team as an LGBTQ+ Victim and Survivor Support Advocate!

Position Overview:

Are you passionate about making a meaningful impact in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence? Do you excel in advocacy, crisis intervention, and delivering culturally sensitive support? In Our Own Voices, Inc. (IOOV) is looking for a committed LGBTQ+ Victim and Survivor Support Advocate to provide critical services that empower victims and survivors, helping them understand the dynamics of victimization and stabilize their lives. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Crisis Intervention and Support : Offer immediate crisis intervention and hotline counseling to clients, ensuring compassionate and effective support during their time of need.
  • Assist with Housing Stability : Work with clients to secure and maintain safe, appropriate housing, providing guidance on available options and resources.
  • Offer Information and Referrals : Connect clients to general assistance, legal counseling, and advocacy services to meet their holistic needs.
  • Manage Grant Objectives and Outcomes : Ensure program grant objectives and outcomes are met, aligning with IOOV’s mission and strategic goals.

Primary Duties:

  • Champion IOOV's Mission : Uphold and actively advocate for IOOV's mission of promoting health, wellness, and self-determination for LGBTQ+ communities, with a special focus on people of color.
  • Collaborate Across Teams : Work closely with IOOV team members to support clients affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking through coordinated, client-centered services.
  • Coordinate Comprehensive Support Services : Arrange safe shelter, provide information and referrals, develop safety plans, and offer legal counseling and advocacy to clients.
  • Maintain Accurate Case Notes : Keep detailed written case notes and manage the LGBT domestic violence referral line, ensuring comprehensive documentation and follow-up.
  • Training and Capacity Building : Provide training and technical assistance to mainstream victim service providers, enhancing their capacity to serve LGBTQ+ survivors.
  • Engage in Community Advocacy : Actively participate in local and statewide task forces focused on domestic and sexual violence advocacy and support.
  • Facilitate Healing and Empowerment : Lead support groups and alternative healing workshops that address the unique needs of LGBTQ+ survivors.
  • Ensure Compliance and Confidentiality : Submit timely documentation and reports as required and maintain strict confidentiality in all aspects of programming.
  • Build Strong Community Partnerships : Collaborate with community partners to ensure clients have access to culturally relevant services and resources.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, or a related field (MSW preferred).
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse staff, clients, and volunteers in a variety of settings.
  • Paid experience in case management and counseling, with a focus on serving LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Direct experience working with domestic violence, sexual assault, or related issues.
  • A strong commitment to advocating for LGBTQ+ people of color and addressing community-specific issues.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with social services and the court system.
  • Creative, strategic thinking, and excellent time management skills.

Preferred:

  • Two or more years of experience working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
  • A 4-year degree in a related field (additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree).

Skills Needed:

  • Self-directed, solution-oriented, and able to take initiative.
  • Strong advocacy skills and a commitment to empowering marginalized communities.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse personalities and varying work ethics.
  • Proficiency in data collection, reporting, and program evaluation.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a strong understanding of professional boundaries.
