Investigative Data Reporter
WNYC/Gothamist Newsroom
The WNYC and Gothamist newsroom seeks an ambitious, detail-oriented and experienced investigative data reporter to join the Investigative & Narrative reporting team.
The reporter should have experience producing informative, engaging and accurate data-driven stories. Our newsroom strives to have an impact on public policy and the lives of New Yorkers in our region. A proven track record in obtaining, analyzing and creatively combining complex datasets is required, as is a proficiency with data visualization tools.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to manage multiple long-term projects across different interest areas, while also producing quick-turn data reporting on developing stories. We’re looking for a journalist who can not only pitch and produce enterprise data stories, but who can also collaborate with colleagues to enhance their enterprise and investigative work. This is a key role in an evolving and ambitious newsroom. The WNYC and Gothamist newsroom strives to make the New York City metro region work for the people who live here, and has ambitious goals to reach new, diverse audiences through impactful, audience-focused journalism. Our reporters produce high-quality content for live air, on-demand podcasts and Gothamist.
Responsibilities:
Pitch and report data-driven stories on New York City and our region for both our audio and digital platforms
Produce clear, thorough, fair, timely and accurate reporting
Identify areas of interest for journalism that can have a significant impact on public policy and on the lives of New Yorkers and others in our region
Develop key sources in specific areas of interest in collaboration with the Investigations & Narrative editor
Develop data workflows around key coverage areas that allow the team to quickly publish data-driven stories when news breaks
Reliably meet publishing deadlines
Participate fully as a member of the Investigative & Narrative team by contributing to coverage plans, meetings, brainstorming sessions, and newsroom projects
Effectively coordinate and collaborate with other editors and digital journalists for maximum reach across our platforms
Enthusiastically participate in newsroom-wide efforts to improve workflows, policies, and various practices as requested
Qualifications:
At least five years experience as a data reporter and working with data visualization tools, preferably with experience in a daily newsroom
Proven track record in in-depth, investigative and long-form journalism
Demonstrated ability to file clear, accurate copy on complex subjects for both audio and digital platforms
Demonstrated ability to receive constructive feedback and incorporate the feedback into the work
Knowledge of New York City government, issues, and the region
Experience managing multiple long-term projects
Superb communication skills, including public speaking skills
Aptitude and comfort producing a broad range of content, including audio, text news stories, and social media
Demonstrated commitment to an equity lens in every aspect of reporting
Deep commitment to accurate, ethical journalism, and impeccable journalistic integrity and judgment
Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking
The ability to work effectively with the public and colleagues at New York Public Radio
