Sevee & Maher Engineers, Inc. (SME) has a new full-time position for an entry- or mid-level Geotechnical Soils Laboratory Technician at our office in Cumberland, Maine.

Position Summary

SME is looking for a technician to join our in-house Geotechnical Soils Testing Laboratory. This is an exceptional opportunity for a motivated individual to grow professionally and to potentially move into the Laboratory Manager position. Experience is preferred, but we will train the right person. You will report to, and be mentored by, the Laboratory Manager, with additional support from senior engineers, geologists, hydrologists, and scientists who are experts in their fields.

Your Impact

Because there is no “typical” project at SME, the Geotechnical Soils Laboratory Technician participates in a diverse and dynamic portfolio of projects with SME’s multidisciplinary staff, particularly in the Solid Waste, Geotechnical, Civil, Water Resources, Site Investigation and Remediation, and Brownfields sectors. Your work will contribute meaningfully to the success of our clients’ projects.

As an SME Geotechnical Soils Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for:

• Testing of soils and other materials for index properties, including water content, particle-size distribution, moisture-density relationship, plasticity, and specific gravity
• Performing permeability, strength, and consolidation testing of soils
• Performing data reduction and data analysis
• Reporting a summary of findings
• Maintaining the laboratory and equipment to industry standards

as well as:

• Maintaining a high level of organizational skills to keep tasks on schedule, and
• Being an integral team member who is adept at performing high-quality work that serves our clients well.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• A.S. or B.S. degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, Soil Science, or other related field is preferred
• Lab experience is a plus
• Attention to detail
• Effective communication (oral and written) skills, and
• Ability to work independently
