The Summer Fellow, or alternatively, the Summer Intern, provides legal research, legal analysis, and support to Pro Bono Center clinics and programs. The internship will run from May 19th to August 1st, with a requirement of 25 hours per week.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists staff attorneys and managing attorneys in preparing for legal clinics and resource centers.
  • Provides legal research and legal analysis on issues that will include immigration law, family law, and probate law.
  • Staffs the immigration clinic, Family Law Assistance Network (FLAN), and Probate Legal Assistance Network (PLAN) in person on clinic dates.
  • Reviews documents providing legal information for accuracy and advises Pro Bono Center attorneys on necessary changes to any such documents.
  • Updates and drafts new materials for self-represented litigants and responds to and maintains records of requests for materials or information.
  • Refers appropriate matters to Pro Bono Center programs as well as other area legal services providers.
  • Helps to identify emerging issues and develops recommendations for service models.
  • Assists in preparing community outreach and legal education materials for prospective clients and community members.
  • Drafts forms, pleadings, reports, correspondence, notices, and other documents for attorney review.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fellows must be graduates of an ABA accredited law school.
  • Interns must be enrolled in a full-time or part-time ABA accredited law school program.
  • Demonstrated interest in public interest law.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be detail oriented and deadline driven. Able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Must work well in a team environment and be able to interact, including in-person, with Bar members, volunteers, vendors, the public and Bar employees.
  • Must work well under pressure, possess excellent organizational abilities, and able to manage several priorities in a day.
  • Must be adaptable, creative, and self-motivated.
  • Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Law school clinical experience.
  • Experience with a legal services organization that provides legal services to indigent individuals.
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
