Function
Responsible for ensuring compliance with corporate policies and local, state, and federal regulatory safety, industrial hygiene and environmental requirements. Develops and implements safety and industrial hygiene solutions to provide a safe workplace for all employees. Provides training and consultation for employees and managers in developing and implementing safety, industrial hygiene and environmental programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops and implements action plans for improvement in safety, industrial hygiene, noise levels and environmental compliance. Evaluates production procedures to assess consistency with good safety and environmental practices while promoting productive manufacturing methods.
- Assures all new equipment and equipment / process modifications comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations.
- Leads investigations for all near miss, first aid, property damage and recordable/lost time incidents. Helps develop and implements appropriate corrective actions using appropriate teams and responsible parties.
- Organizes, schedules, and performs all Safety Training including new hire orientation and contractor safety training. Ensures all required safety training meets established regulations and deadlines.
- Manages environmental activities in the facility, including maintaining data, developing engineering changes, processes, and controls, and interpreting, submitting, and assuring compliance with the terms of regulatory permits:
- Title V/MACT Air Permit compliance – Develops engineering controls and implements actions to assure compliance with permits. Assures PDS monitoring system provides notification of incinerator temperature deviations and that appropriate corrective actions are taken. Assures stack testing is completed according to permit requirements. Maintains records and submits required reports to appropriate regulatory agencies. Trains supervision and appropriate hourly employees on regulations and activities.
- Water compliance – Takes appropriate preventive action to assure that no process chemicals enter into the sanitary or storm water effluent. Tests samples and maintains records; submits required reports to appropriate regulatory agencies.
- Hazardous waste compliance and reduction – Manages hazardous waste (RCRA) activities in the facility including certifying proper disposal facilities and coordinating and monitoring shipments. Maintains up-to-date skills and knowledge of hazardous waste requirements through proper training. Trains supervision and appropriate hourly employees on hazardous waste regulations and activities. Develops and implements actions to reduce hazardous waste generation and the cost of disposal.
- Manages Hazmat DOT.
- Schedules and completes emergency drills on all shifts annually. Drills must include but are not limited to coded drills, evacuation, shelter, spill, medical emergency, fire, and security.
- Works with safety team to promote participation in the Safety Awareness Program and assigns resources to corrective actions.
- Maintains SDS information and updates On-Line SDS system.
- Conducts regular scheduled inspections of AEDs, Emergency Disaster bags, fire blankets, eye wash stations, first aid kits, spill containers, etc.
- Facilitates the activities of the Safety Team with the help of the Human Resource and Plant Managers. Develops bi-weekly agenda, tracks action items, ensures minutes are taken and uploaded.
- Assists with the development and implementation of appropriate emergency response procedures for potential safety and environmental incidents. Assures proficiency of emergency responders through training and drills.
- Maintains data, completes, and submits all required corporate, state, federal and local safety, industrial hygiene and environmental reporting. Utilizes resources to assure compliance with all policies and regulations.
- Coordinates industrial hygiene testing and assures annual auditory testing is administered to appropriate personnel. Interprets results and determines and implements engineering and PPE control measures as required.
- Maintains Safety SharePoint and develops daily TBT for plant meetings.
- Coordinates and performs safety audits on a regular basis. Identifies and monitors completion of corrective actions to address deficiencies.
- Maintains certifications required by manager. Examples: Forklift Train the Trainer, Confined Space Certified Trainer and Rescue Trainer, Competent Person Fall Training, Haz Com, HazWhoper etc.
- Other work-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in safety, occupational health, environmental engineering, environmental management or related engineering field.
- Two to three years of safety experience in a manufacturing environment with environmental and worker’s compensation management responsibilities.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local government OSHA and environmental regulations
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite required.
- Must have or be able to obtain certifications in RCRA, DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation, First Aid and CPR/AED trainer, and fall-protection.
