Position Summary

The Director, Individual Philanthropy will serve as a key leader within The Asia Foundations individual philanthropy team, responsible for designing, implementing, and expanding a robust individual giving program. This role will focus on cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a portfolio of mass and major donors, as well as building strategies to engage high-net-worth individuals globally.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, relationship builder, and results-oriented fundraiser with a proven record of securing significant gifts in the $50,000+ range and the ability to inspire philanthropic investment in international causes.

An understanding of The Asia Foundations work and the ability to speak about the importance of international development is important. A collaborative, entrepreneurial spirit and the drive to build something new are fundamental to success (and hopefully, an exciting reason to join the team!).

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and execute a multi-year strategy to grow individual giving revenue, with an emphasis on major gifts, legacy giving, and endowment campaigns.
  • Partner with the CSE to identify and engage prospects.
  • Oversee donor pipeline management and forecasting for individual philanthropy.
  • Manage and guide professional growth of IP team.

Donor Engagement & Stewardship

  • Manage a portfolio of 60-80 major donors and prospects, cultivating long-term relationships and stewarding for growth.
  • Craft compelling cases for support and bespoke proposals aligned with donor interests and The Asia Foundations priorities.
  • Ensure personalized stewardship plans that deepen donor commitment and retention.

Program Development

  • Lead the creation of innovative donor engagement opportunities, including events, travel programs, and thought-leadership convenings.
  • Collaborate with communications to develop targeted messaging, impact reports, and campaigns for individual donors.

Collaboration & Team Building

  • Mentor and support fundraising staff in best practices for individual giving.
  • Coordinate with program teams across Asia and the Pacific to align fundraising strategies with programmatic needs and impact stories.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 812 years in nonprofit fundraising, with significant experience in major gift fundraising and growing portfolios significantly.
  • Demonstrated success in building and managing a robust donor pipeline.
  • Knowledge of international development (or similar field), global philanthropy trends, and cross-cultural relationship building.
  • Exceptional communication, storytelling, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

Attributes

  • Strategic and entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to design and grow new initiatives.
  • High emotional intelligence and cultural sensitivity.
  • Collaborative leadership style with strong orientation toward team success.
  • Commitment to The Asia Foundations mission and values.
