Summary Job Description:

The Behavior Intervention Specialist (BIS) is responsible for the oversight, development and implementation of person-centered behavioral supports and services to individuals residing in Little Flowers Queens residential programs. Responsivities include but are not limited to conducting the Functional Behavioral Analysis, baselining identified and targeted behaviors, development of Behavior Support Plans, analyzing data collection, counseling individuals and completing all required documentation as per OPWDD's regulations and Little Flower's policies and procedures. The BIS will take a strong lead in communicating with and advocating on behalf of the individuals/agency to doctors, practitioners, clinicians, family members, etc., in the community towards diagnosing conditions, developing plans of care and evaluating responses. The BIS, in conjunction with the residential team, will provide oversight of psychiatric medications, including obtaining required consents and providing written reports to the treating psychiatrist/clinician. The BIS will be responsible to provide clinical trainings and support to direct support professionals on behavior plans, appropriate interventions, clinical diagnosis, etc. The BIS will serve as the clinical leader in the residential programs.


Essential Functions
  • Serve as the clinical role model and leader in Little Flower residential programs.
  • Actively participate and present at Human Rights Committee (HRC) meetings, Life Plan (LP) and LP review meetings, SAP and SAP review meetings, staff meetings, Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings and other forums as requested by supervisor.
  • Advocate to and interact with psychiatric, psychotherapy and psycho-sexual services when necessary.
  • Conduct internal audits and submit findings to the supervisor.
  • Obtain required consents from families for Human Rights committee for medical treatment (including medication), behavior modification plans, restrictive equipment..
  • Conduct internal audits of clinical policies, procedures and systems to ensure regulatory compliance as per OPWDD and all Little Flower policies, procedures and best practices.
  • Consult with doctors, clinicians, etc. to ensure optimal clinical treatments are provided to people being supported.
  • Work closely with each team to plan best course of treatment for maximum clinical health of people being supported
  • Ensure completion of Functional Behavioral Assessments and development of individualized behavior support plans and staff interventions as per OPWDD regulations
  • Implements and monitors effective behavioral data tracking systems
  • Completes behavior health related plans and additional documents as needed.
  • Provides training to staff on behavior treatment plans, and on topics/plans related to behavioral health
  • Engage individuals in individual and/or group treatment as needed
  • Coordinates psychological care and behavioral programs with families, medical providers, residential settings or other relevant stakeholders in the individual's service provision.
  • Provide crisis intervention, as well as instruct staff in appropriate techniques for addressing challenging behaviors
  • Attends interdisciplinary team meetings, as appropriate, providing input particularly on individuals with identified or emerging behavioral challenges.
  • Conducts other related tasks as needed or required
  • Provide training and in services for BISs, Managers and DSPs
  • Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings, committee/specialty, and provide feedback to staff as requested by supervisor.
  • Ensure health, safety & welfare of individuals
  • Travel to different locations throughout NYC and Long Island is required
Qualifications & Work Experience
  • Master's degree in related field preferred, BA required
  • Valid NYS driver's license is required to conduct site visits to multiple sites/Residences
  • 1-3 years of OPWDD clinical experience preferred.
  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among teams by communicating information; responding to requests, building rapport & participating in team problem-solving methods
  • In-depth knowledge of OPWDD services, regulations and best practices required
  • Excellent communication, verbal, written and people skills are required

Travel Requirements:

This position requires travel throughout Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island. A valid NYS driver's license is required.
